We love to have parties! No, not wild parties! We’ve outgrown that. I guess you could call our parties “mild parties.” They may be rather tame, but they are always fun.
When we have parties at our house, they are usually outdoor parties. We are blessed to live in Tennessee where the climate is perfect for being outdoors most of the year. We are also blessed to have nice facilities for outdoor entertaining. So, we party outside!
A few years ago, we built a post-and-beam outdoor great room onto our home. We already had a 16x40 concrete patio, but it did not have a roof over it, and our use of the space was limited. It was south-facing, and the sun made it too hot. And when it rained, well, it was too wet. So we finally put a roof over the area and created an outdoor great room. We designed space for cooking, dining, and a sitting area by the fireplace. Now, any time can be party time – rain or shine!
At the same time, we built a timber frame carport. We wanted to have an open carport so that we could use the area as a pavilion for entertaining larger groups. When we have enough folks coming over, we move out the cars and move in the tables and chairs. It works quite nicely.
I must say that since we built the outdoor living facilities, we kind of feel like we’re on vacation 24/7. We spend nearly as much time outdoors as we do indoors, and we spend more time together as a family. Our children love to bring their friends over to sit out by the fire, and our extended family loves to party at our house.
